Real Life Couples Share Heartwarming Love Stories of How They Got Their 'Song'

Music has been used by humans since the dawn of humanity to express emotion. So it only makes sense that when two people fall in love, they connect to a song together as a unit. It's honestly a beautifully simple, yet poetic sign that shows you two have a connection. You don't just have songs with any 'ol person in your life, only with the really special ones. It's like a once in a lifetime moment, a strike of lightning, when it happens. You don't really plan it, you're just sitting there, and either you're listening to a song or a song pops into your head and it just so perfectly fits how you two feel about each other and that's that—that is now your song. Music is shown to even be one of the only things Alzheimer patients can recognize, so once the memory has faded, the feelings that song remembers will stay. Anyways, didn't expect to be crying at work today, yet here I am. All of these stories below of how real couples got their love song are heartwarming, but some will downright break you.     After we had been dating for a bit, we planned a trip to Memphis, Tennessee to meet up with friends. She came to my house and left her car at my place and I drove to the airport. About the time she was to arrive, I had to be elsewhere. I would be returning shortly, but I didn't want her to arrive to a house that was empty and quiet, so I looked up some songs with "Memphis" in the title.

    "Walking in Memphis" was the best of the ones that popped up, so I put it on a constant loop and headed out. She loved what I did and like me, thought the song was good, but maybe not the greatest thing she'd ever heard. Then we went on our trip and I realized once there, there is a lot of music history in that city. We visited Sun Studio, The Rock & Soul Museum and Beale Street including B.B. Kings and Coyote Ugly.

    Listening to the song afterward, I connected with it on a new level. Later, I heard an interview Cohn did where he talked about how he came to write the song and that made me love it even more. As we prepare to move to Southern Illinois from California, I can't wait to make the occasional visit to Memphis since it will be within driving distance.

    While drinking bourbon and listening to the album on Christmas Eve together (we met that thanksgiving), we realized we had gotten really close, really quick, and the line "Do you believe in past lives? Haven't I met you before?" off the title track had an eerie quality to it. We had become extremely comfortable with each other's company so quickly that we felt we had always known each other. That line (and album), Past Lives, met so much to us, that it became "our song".
