Posted by u/readwiteandblu 4 hours ago Couples who have an "our song," how did it gain that title? discussion B Me and my girlfriend have been together for 14 years. We don't have an official "our song," but the closest we do have is "Walking in Memphis" by Marc Cohn.

After we had been dating for a bit, we planned a trip to Memphis, Tennessee to meet up with friends. She came to my house and left her car at my place and I drove to the airport. About the time she was to arrive, I had to be elsewhere. I would be returning shortly, but I didn't want her to arrive to a house that was empty and quiet, so I looked up some songs with "Memphis" in the title.

"Walking in Memphis" was the best of the ones that popped up, so I put it on a constant loop and headed out. She loved what I did and like me, thought the song was good, but maybe not the greatest thing she'd ever heard. Then we went on our trip and I realized once there, there is a lot of music history in that city. We visited Sun Studio, The Rock & Soul Museum and Beale Street including B.B. Kings and Coyote Ugly.

Listening to the song afterward, I connected with it on a new level. Later, I heard an interview Cohn did where he talked about how he came to write the song and that made me love it even more. As we prepare to move to Southern Illinois from California, I can't wait to make the occasional visit to Memphis since it will be within driving distance.

Skylark_Ark 3 hr. ago edited 3 hr. ago Lover's Spit - Broken Social Scene was ours. We were young mental health social workers. In our off time together, we were hard hitting our weekends (climbing, sailing and Mt. Biking). It was 2008 and I had just added Broken Social Scene to my MySpace playlist which was playing in the backround after we had just made love. It was quiet except for the song playing. The chorus played:

couple months later we quit our jobs, cashed out our retirement, bought a seaworthy sailboat and sailed the Pacific for the next decade until breast cancer took my wife 4 years ago.

My wife a couple of months before she passed. Today was an important day for us, so OP's question is quite relevant.

w Wi112live 3 hr. ago Given today's news makes this slightly poignant... Dirty Old Town, The Pogues version. How did it gain that title? Because my wife TOLD me it was "our song" and it ended up being the first dance at our wedding party.

Our friends played an exceptional punk cover of this at the do and as I remember my wife and I had the dance floor to ourselves.

coldflamest 3 hr. ago ● Ah, our couple song, the musical masterpiece that turns our love story into a romantic comedy soundtrack. Every time "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston starts playing, my partner and I share a look that says, "Yes, we're about to dramatically serenade each other." We can't hit the high notes like Whitney, but we sure try. Picture two people

attempting a passionate duet while the cat gives us judgmental side-eye. It's our anthem, our ballad, and the reason our neighbors invested in noise-canceling headphones. Who needs candlelight dinners when you have the power ballad of the century? Whitney, you're our relationship's unsung hero, and our rendition might not win Grammys, but it definitely deserves an Oscar for Best Overdramatic Lip-Syncing.

_Total_Garbage_. 3 hr. ago Before we met, my current wife and I had each gotten out of long term relationships. During the year I listened to Langhorne Slim's Past Lives album, a great album and incidentally, a great breakup album. When we started dating, we talked and exchanged a lot of music we listened to. I suggested this album and she also fell in love with it.

While drinking bourbon and listening to the album on Christmas Eve together (we met that thanksgiving), we realized we had gotten really close, really quick, and the line "Do you believe in past lives? Haven't I met you before?" off the title track had an eerie quality to it. We had become extremely comfortable with each other's company so quickly that we felt we had always known each other. That line (and album), Past Lives, met so much to us, that it became "our song".

TrebleRose689 2 hr. ago • Lovesong by The Cure. On our 2nd or 3rd date it came on in the car and we both started singing it together. It was the first song we ever sang together like that, and obviously has quite romantic lyrics, so it became "Our Song" pretty soon after that (and ended up being our wedding song too!)

__andnothinghurt. 3 hr. ago "Going gets tough" by the growlers because when we lived in our tiny first house together it's the song we played when we had to poop so the other wouldn't hear. Now whenever we hear it it makes us smile, we call it the poop song. Not quite as romantic as the rest but it is what it is

After we both got furloughed, we hit the bottle pretty hard but we got to know each other so much more intimately beyond the physical because we could only focus on the "now". We didn't know what the future would hold during the early days of the pandemic.

Anyway, one sunny morning we wake up, I'm still a little drunk, and she's softly singing Tennessee Whiskey while we held each other and I just started weeping to myself. She sounded so beautiful and the way the sun cast itself into my room, it made me forget myself in that moment as well as all the insecurities of life outside that bedroom. She just broke through my defenses, and the bluebird in my heart sang through my tears and she accepted it without judgement and saw me in a different,

more nuanced light. The lyrics just made sense for who we are and what we mean to each other. She changed my life because of the way she sang. After she left, I told my roommate, "I'm gonna marry that girl." And I did just that, last month.

HackerTosh 2 hr. ago My wife and I had a very informal wedding. There was no "don't see the bride before the ceremony" or whatever, we just drove to the church in our crappy car. On the radio "You Dropped a Bomb On Me" came on and we just looked at each other and laughed. It has been our song for the 40 years since.

bruinslacker 2 hr. ago ● I Don't Mind by Usher It's about Usher being in love with a stripper and telling her that he doesn't mind that he dances for other guys as long as she comes home to him.
  • 24
It's been my and my husband's song since about our third date. We had a great night out dancing in a very NSFW fashion. The peak song of the night was I don't Mind, and because it's such an unorthodox, but in my opinion very sincere, love song, it became "our song".

AgreeableDad 2 hr. ago Budapest by George Ezra When we were dating, my wife and I drive to the shore on weekends listening to satellite radio. This country station she liked had a show which played new, unknown and boundary-pushing country acts. Somehow Budapest was showcased - I guess because of that train-like bass line? - and we both immediately loved it. We weren't even 100% certain what the lyrics were.
  • 26
Of course the song is about a guy willing to give up everything and everyone for his newfound treasure. This became our entry song at our wedding. Still makes me misty when I hear it.

mr_evilweed 1 hr. ago ● Little bit of a weird one... Our song is I'll Be Around by The Spinners, which I think most people know is clearly a break up song. My wife and I used to be coworkers and both of us were seeing other people but we got to know each other and were clearly falling for each other. I broke up with my girlfriend at the time as I didn't think we had a future together, and shortly after my (now) wife let me know she

was leaving the company so we likely wouldn't see each much from that point on. As a goodbye present I got her tickets to a concert for an artist I'd introduced her to (Jill Scott) and we ended up going together "as friends". Her boyfriend was fine with it. Big mistake on her boyfriend's part haha. So at the concert I admitted that I was in love with her and didn't feel like I could continue to just be friends

with her. She admitted that she had strong feelings for me but was living with her boyfriend and couldn't risk it all for me. I was disappointed but accepted it. On the drive out we turned on the radio and I'll Be Around came on and the lyrics were TOO perfect. "This... is our fork in the road.../ Love's last episode..." "But there's always a chance... a tiny spark will remain/ and sparks turn into flames." "Whenever you call me, I'll be there./ Whenever you need me, I'll be there./ I'll be arou

We went our separate ways and then three days later she told me she couldn't take me not being in her life and she'd leave her boyfriend for me. That was 10 years ago and we've been married for 7. So even though it's a breakup song, it's special to us because it perfectly encapsulated that brief few days when we decided to risk it all.

tattedupgirl 18 min. ago ● We were 14 and I'd snuck over to his place after school. We were sitting in his bedroom and just when we started making out Angel by Aerosmith came on and it's been our song ever since. We are 41 now and we both smile like idiots at each other when we hear it and we made sure it played at our wedding reception.
